2017 is the Year of the Sleeve

Fashion is cyclical and swings in a pendulum. Diffetent trends come and go with various shapes and silhouettes coming in and out of style. The year is about halfway over and I think it’s fair to say 2017 is the year of the sleeve.

Year of the Sleeve

Some trends I loved (like the metallic  studs and pyramids trend from years back) and some trends I just couldn’t get behind (like one fall/winter season when everything was velvet). Of all the trends going on right now, I’d have to say my favorite are statement sleeves.

Bell, bishop, lantern. Ruffled, gathered, tiered. This summer especially, fashion has breathed new life and creativity into the humble, often overlooked sleeve.

I’ve seen some really experimental sleeves lately and I can understand how this trend may seem offputting or intimidating to the sartorially risk averse.

However, this top captures the look beautifully and shows a stylish way to try out the trend . A simple and streamlined fit everywhere else provides a subdued backdrop for these sleeves to shine.

For maximim impact I paired this top with a voluminous skirt that echoes the shape of the sleeves. If you’re not as daring, this top could easily be paired with a slender body-skimming pant that would accentuate the look of the sleeves and flatter the figure.

I know sometimes different shapes in unexpected places can be a bit hard to swallow but I think this is definitely a trend worth trying. Often the shapes I’ve seen are very whimsical and feminine with a bit of a retro feel. I’m having a lot of fun embracing these current shapes and I encourage everyone to give it a try. There’s something so transformative and dreamy about a full, fluttering sleeve.
