Breaking Beauty Standards in Alessia Cara’s “Scars To Your Beautiful”

On July 11th, Alessia Cara turned 20-years-old. But instead of making herself the focus, she gave us a gift. She released the music video for her third single “Scars To Your Beautiful” on And in an instant, the world met a handful of individuals that while different in appearance, share similar stories of triumph over differences. And I was one of those people. Alessia Cara 002

Making the Cut

I’ve been sharing bits and pieces of my story for a while now and when I found out I would be getting to share a bit more of it through this music video, I couldn’t believe it. The first time I heard this song I cried. The lyrics spoke to me in ways even some close friends wouldn’t understand.

It was midday in late May when I met up with the production crew. I was nervous. While I’m comfortable posing in still pictures, being the subject of a video makes me self-conscious. Luckily the director made me feel more comfortable. “Just look at me and keep it very conversational,” he advised.

So I ignored the cameras and spoke to him like it was just us two. He asked me to share my story. To share my struggle. My dark moments. My painful moments. But then also to share my light. My triumph. My lessons.

My Story

The things that seem like weaknesses, that seem like weird things that make you strange ― when you become an adult and you get out into the world, you’re gonna find out that all those differences are your greatest strengths

Also quoted in The Huffington Post, what I meant by this is that oftentimes when we’re down on ourselves, it’s because we’re not seeing the bigger picture. Our potential. Our possibilities. We’re stuck in a bubble, be it a unhealthy school environment, a judgmental small town, or even a stifling mindset.  But once we finally get out of that, what’s holding us back, there’s so much beauty to be found. I want to encourage others currently struggling to find their way out of their bubbles. Sometimes the only advice you can give is to tell people to hold on. When I’ve been at my lowest, no soothing words really helped. But I just held on even when I wanted to give up on myself.

I’m so glad Alessia chose to share this with her fans because it covers topics that are very dear to me. I hope this song and video help you to see the immense beauty within yourself and others, whether as a reminder or for the first time.
